I am trying to revive an old laptop. It has Intel 82845G graphics card. VL 7.1 Light is installed (one with customized IceWM). X kind of works, but not really. Pixel size seems to be like in 1024x768, which would be okay. However display occupies only upper left part of the physical screen, an area which seems to have dimensions of 800x600 pixels. The rest of the screen (bottom and right side) is empty and I can't move mouse pointer into those areas. i915 module is loaded. Xrandr reports LVDS coutput with 800x600 to be connected. Also reports VGA1 output with 1024x768, 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions. Attempts to disconnect LVDS and connect VGA1 1024x768 result in black screen. (xrandr --output LVDS -off; xrandr --output VGA1 -s 1024x768).
Originally laptop came with WinXP in 1024x768. Previously I installed OpenSUSE 10.3 which worked fine and OpenSUSE 11.2 which had to use low performance fb driver. It is an old Siemens Fujitsu 'Amilo'.
Tomorrow I am going to try to generate xorg.conf and switch driver from i915 to intel. Also, I am going to try to add 'nomodeset' parameter to LILO entry. Is there anything else I could try ?
