screen resolution on VL 7.1 lite [SOLVED]

I am new to VL and it looks like a good fit for my current project (simple database program running on old, specialized hardware)

I have it running and everything is going good except for the screen resolution.  For some reason it is stuck at 640x480.  According to the monitor specs I should be able to get at least 800x600 if not 1024x768.

Digging through the forums this question comes up a lot, but I am not figuring it out.

This installation does not seem to have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in place and when I try to create one, I can't get the graphics to work at all.

I have tried adding a new mode of 800x600 to xrandr per instructions found at  wiki.archlinux . org but still no joy. xrandr has the maximum resolution of the monitor set at 640x480.

I found a reference to vasm having some settings for this as well, but my installation does not seem to have these options.

Any help is greatly appreciated!  Let me know what additional info I can give to help resolve this.

It would be helpful if you could tell us what video chipset/card you are using and what kind of monitor.  The answers are likely to vary by manufacturer and possibly the chipset as well.  For example, you may need to install a driver.

Ok, is there a way to get the chipset info fromthe OS, or do I need to get it off of the card itself?   

I am dealing with very old hardware so this may be a bit of a challenge.

Yes, a little.  We know it's an old Trident chipset.  I had one of those in a laptop I had years ago and they can be tricky but they are supported.  What we don't know is the precise chipset used.  Was this a store bought system or home built originally?  If it was store bought the brand and model will allow you to search for the specs of the system online and find out which Trident chipset it is.  The brand and model of the monitor would also help.

That info helps a lot, jrtapper. My apologies for forgetting exactly what to do with that info; I'm studying it again right now.

While waiting, maybe 'man trident' would be interesting. Keep in mind that, when possible, it's best to go without /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Put the sections or snippets that are needed into a file or two under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Files there are appended (more or less) to what the server determines automatically. There are examples in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but unfortunately none of those fills your exact need. Note that most files are named "number-something". The name doesn't really matter, but the files are read in alphabetical (numbers are first) order.

'man xorg.conf' will be helpful too. It applies when pieces of a conf are put into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, as it does to a standalone xorg.conf. You don't need to supply the whole thing, in other words.

I'm looking at this because I should know it. I've been having trouble with concentration, so maybe you can piece it together from here or someone else can chime in. Or you can nudge me along on IRC while I'm there, irc.freenode.net  #vectorlinux

Caitlyn posted while I was typing. Having some monitor info would be helpful when filling in "Screen" or "Monitor". Something to call it, at least. A lot of Thinkpads used this card. If it's a laptop, starting with the info etched or printed on the machine could lead to what's needed.

A lot of Toshiba laptops use it as well.  If you do a search you'll find the issues I had with that card in the forum and the solutions.  IIRC he or she will need an xorg.conf file for this old chipset.  Also, not all Trident chipsets require the same settings, which is why I was asking for specific model info.

Thanks guys!

This is a desktop system, not a laptop, so this is a PCI card in the bus.   The system is completely home built from a variety of pieces so there isn't any manufacturer data to look up. 

I did find some data on the monitor on this site   www1 .ecs.uni-ruse.bg /kp/less/dispalys/VD-site/specs/monitor.html  It is a Shamrock SRC1451  This site says that it has a max resolution of 875x650 but the FCC data on this monitor says it should go as high as 1024x768  fccid.io /IQXSRC1451

I will keep reading and see what I can come up with too.

You can try the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-trident.conf given at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Trident

You should already have the needed driver. I don't suggest trying to set up the framebuffer at this time.

Thanks I came across that and wasn't sure if it was the right thing to try.

I took the box apart and took some pictures of the actual card.  Hopefully, I will be able to attach them and this might help some more.

I haven't seen a TGUI9680 in... well...  That's a 1994 chipset just like it says on the chip.  OK, the good news is that it's still supported.  You've got to love Linux for that.  Hate to say this, but you might need to setup the framebuffer to get the full resolution out of it.  No harm in trying without first.

You'll also only get 1024x768 with 16 bit color.  If you want 24 bpp you are limited to 800x600.

You may just need to add a mode line directly below the DefaultDepth entry as follows:

Other than that, use their sample file and see what happens.

I just read the output you posted.  You're system is trying to use the VESA driver and that card is NOT VESA compatible at all.  You need to be certain the trident driver is installed and you need to explicitly call it in an xorg.conf Device section. 

First, check to see if xf86-video-trident is installed on your system.  If it isn't you will absolutely need that package.

slapt-get --list | grep trident
will let you know if it's there or not.  You can also look in the GUI package manager, gslapt.

Once you've insured it's there you'll need the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If that doesn't do it you'll have to go with the framebuffer driver.

I don't really care about the colors in this application, I would take monochrome if I could get 1024x768.  :D

I have to step away from this project for a while but I will try your suggestions a bit later and update when I can.

Ok I am back and still struggleing with this. I added the xorg.conf forcing the trident driver and added the example trident config from the archlinux link and it failed.  So I decided to make these changes one step at a time.  First check for the trident driver;

it doesn't look like the trident driver loaded at all.  Am I missing something here, or do I need to have the other config file as well to make this work?
