I never know when to quit.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/46-trident.conf:
Code: [Select]
Section "Device"
  Identifier   "trident 0"
  Driver       "trident"
  Option       "AccelMethod"   "EXA"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier   "SRC1451"
  HorizSync    30-38kHz
  VertRefresh  47-104Hz
  DisplaySize  245 182
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier      "Screen 0"
  Device          "trident 0"
  Monitor         "SRC1451"
  DefaultDepth    16
EndSection

If that doesn't work, I have only two more ideas and no more after that:
1) Comment out ("#") the AccelMethod line in the Device section. Add this line just after that:
  Option   "Accel"  "false"
and retry.

2) Comment out the entire Device section and the "Device" line in the screen section. Use removepkg to remove the trident driver. This will let whatever gave you a basic display before try again with a little more information available about the monitor.

Eureka!  I've got it!!

Another morning of messing around with ths and Roarde's clues I have a full color 800x600 display.

The functional .conf file looks like this;

Code: [Select]
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "SRC1451"
HorizSync 30-38
VertRefresh 47-104
DisplaySize 254 182
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 0"
Monitor "SRC1451"
DefaultDepth 16
EndSection

This worked only after I removed the trident driver package.  I guess the driver itself must a significant part of the problem.

For future readers, note that the "kHz" and "Hz" in the earlier post are not allowed and will cause an error.

Thank you so much to Roarde and Cynthia for all their help!
