X not working after installation (10 yr. old laptop)
« on: February 19, 2016, 04:57:24 am »

Hi everyone,

I found out about Vector Linux not too long ago and decided to give it a try to bring an old Acer Aspire laptop back to life. Before doing so, I thought it would be good to try VL on a virtual machine with the same characteristics of the laptop. I was quickly impressed so the next step was to install the OS on the laptop.

The installation went smoothly, as is the GRUB splash screen, but when I rebooted in order to start using VL, X started acting up. The screen went gray, no mouse pointer, and when I pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del, I could see at the top a miniature area that showed what was going on (the usual shutdown process).

I decided to see what was on the grub entry and played around with some VGA modes other than the default vga=788 (pierre.baudu.in/other/grub.vga.modes.html) but none of them worked. Between the time I choose the option in GRUB and the moment X starts misbehaving, I can see the screen that is shown in one of the attachments - then X goes nuts.

I am attaching an image that shows the GRUB entry as well.

Any ideas or suggestions will be more than welcome.

On the grub entry screen, remove the 'quiet splash' part and replace it with '2'.  Then press F10 to boot.  You will see the boot log and will be presented with the text login prompt.  Once there, you can try 'startx'.  It would be nice to see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.  If your screen gets locked up, press ctrl+alt+F2 or F3-F6 and cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep EE

Following your suggestion I managed to get into a Terminal. I saved the log to an USB drive. Here it is.

Please provide the output of "lspci |grep -i vga"

Here it is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter

Also, I am attaching a picture I took after running startx from the console, in case it helps.

Do you have the sis driver installed? This would tell:

Code: [Select]
ls /var/log/packages/xf86-video-sis*

[SOLVED] not working after installation (10 yr. old laptop)
« Reply #7 on: February 22, 2016, 06:01:39 pm »

Do you have the sis driver installed? This would tell:

Code: [Select]
ls /var/log/packages/xf86-video-sis*

It is installed:

/var/log/packages/xf86-video-sis-0.10.7-i586-1vl71

Your answer pointed me in the right direction. I did a quick Google search for sis driver slackware and I found out I could solve this issue by copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa to /etc/xorg.conf. This essentially tells X to use the vesa driver instead of the SiS one.

Now it works like a charm.

Thanks everyone for your help!
