How Do I Auto Login With VL 7.0 Light? [Solved]
« on: September 20, 2016, 05:13:20 pm »

I just installed VL 7.0 Light on an ancient desktop. I seem to have just about everything working except for auto login. I've Googled, searched the forum, looked all over and can't seem to find out how it's done with VL 7.0 Light. The window manager and display manager are what was installed from the CD. I selected Icewm as the window manager, and I have no idea how to figure out what the display manager is.

The question is: How do I implement auto login in VL 7.0 Light w/Icewm?

Hi vlinco, glad to see you still keep those good old machines running.  :)

For auto login: In a terminal, as root, run command "gdmsetup".

Hello nightflier,

Thank you very much for the tip. That worked like a charm.

Now, for those who may not be familiar with the dialog that "gdmsetup" will open, here's a short How To on what to do:

To set auto login with Vector Linux 7.0 Light, in a root terminal session, enter "gdmsetup".

This will open the "Login Window Preferences" dialog.

In the "Login Window Preferences" dialog, click on the "Security" tab.

Under the "Security" tab, check the "Enable Automatic Login" checkbox. This will enable the "User:" pulldown listbox.

Click on the pulldown listbox button to open the list of users.

Select the user whose session will be auto logged into.

Click on the "Close" button to close the "Login Window Preferences" dialog.

That will do it.

Note - As gdmsetup was opening the dialog, I got the following warning message 7 times in the terminal session:

gdmsetup[2267]: Gtk-WARNING: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated

The dialog opened OK, and there was no problem using it.

Thanks again.  vlinco..
