On your phone? Wow!

It looks like there are files missing.

One more test: run command "vxconf", arrow down to "VESA", then press Enter and try "startx" again. That may give you a basic X server with a GUI that would simplify troubleshooting.

No, don't type that out, just knowing that it did not work is okay.

I don't think it is fair to expect you to solve this issue from the command line, if there was a hiccup during installation, this may only be one problem of many.

Do you have access to another computer where you can download and burn iso files?

The other Laptop I've been using has Windows in Finnish [!], and it's developed some sort of error.

Although I'm learning to speak Finnish, this kind of stuff is WAAAAY beyond my comprehension!!!

But! Hopefully, will get it going again when my girlfriend gets home from work.

SO, the answer is yes! I can use another machine!!

I was going to suggest starting again from scratch.

Would really appreciate it if you could point me at the best version for my laptop from the best download site!!

Many thanks again!

I agree that a fresh re-install is the best choice at this point.

Learning Finnish is not a trivial task, I grew up in Norway, next to Finland, and know it is not an easy language. My compliments!

As root in a teminal type these commands (hopefully you are connected to the internet on that box)

Code: [Select]
slapt-get -u
slapt-get -i -y glamor-egl xf86-video-nouveau
reboot and see if your GUI comes up.

Hi!

Thanks for this! Afraid it's not yet connected to the internet, although the wifi light is showing, so I guess I just need to connect it somehow.

Any chance you could tell me how to do that!!??

Cheers!

The command to use is "nmtui". Use the "Edit a connection" first to choose wi-fi network and enter the password.

The easiest way to connect it would be to get a piece of cat5 and connect it to the router.

If your DVD drive is old, it may produce read errors which could cause problems.

Knowing how to create a USB stick with bootable Linux is a valuable skill. Running from a flash drive is also faster than an optical drive. Try rebooting your laptop and look for a brief message to select boot medium. It may be Esc or F9. Or you may see the hint for which key to get into BIOS to select boot device.. normally Del or F2. If you figure this out, and have an unused USB thumb drive 2G or larger, we could try that route.
