Vectorlinux 7.2 RC2 is released. More testing requested.
« on: June 09, 2017, 12:23:45 pm »

A big thank you to all that helped with RC1! Feedback helped us squash some bugs and make improvements. We're almost there, just a little bit more now.

Here are the new and improved ISOs:

Hi nightflier,

How is this supposed to be installed to a USB Flash Drive so that you can boot from it before attempting an install to a Hard Drive? Is that what you should be able to do?

I've tried the following without success.

sudo dd bs=4M if=VL64-7.2-STD-RC2.iso of=/dev/sdd status=progress && sync

sudo dd if=VL64-7.2-STD-RC2.iso of=/dev/sdd

The USB drive is no longer recognised by Thunar.

In Gparted it is indicated that the iso9660 File System is being used and there are no flags set.

Thanks, MTB.

Hi MTB,

Either one should work. I simply use "cp VL64-7.2-STD-RC2.iso /dev/sdd".

After the write operation is done, the USB stick may no longer be recognized by the file manager, that is normal.

Set your computer BIOS to boot from USB and restart.

Many computers use a key to bring up a boot menu. Dells usually use F12, on HP try F9 or Esc.

I shall give the cp command a go later.

Everything else is as it should be.

I have tested other distros with the same USB drive and I am also using Manjaro OpenRC Xfce from a HD in an external USB 3.0 enclosure.

Just to make sure, I downloaded VL64-7.2-STD-RC2.iso one more time,
checked md5sum 6d2e1b9c007a540cdc4970a6df423da9,
copied to USB drive,
booted and installed on real hardware.

No problems noted. That, of course, does not guarantee that you will have an identical experience.
Please let us know what you find, we'll be happy to help any way we can.

Installed 32 bit rc2 on Compaq Presariono:
Did not try bootloader.
Difficulty setting time zone - list wouldn't scroll, had to hold down arrow and after releasing, the list would jump to the new selection.
Still no keyboard or mouse on the login screen
 continuing to use b1.

I tried the cp command but it made no difference.

Next, I installed Void Linux, again, on the same USB Flash Drive using the following command and I had no problems.

sudo dd bs=4M if=void-live-x86_64-20170220-xfce.iso of=/dev/sdd status=progress && sync

In Gparted the same information was shown as I mentioned before for the Vector iso except the Label was different of course.

After the Void iso was written to the drive I was also able to mount it in Thunar which I could not do with the Vector iso.

I was also able to boot from this USB drive.

If you need any more data, let me know.

Looks like the VL hybrid ISO may not work with your system. :(
Is burning a DVD an option for you?

cupertino icons are missing from VL7.2 STD RC2

Is this mainly for running the XFCE desktop as root, or does it affect a regular user?

Is burning a DVD an option for you?

I have a Lenovo B590 Laptop purchased in 2014 and this is the first time I have ever had such a problem and I have tested various distros in that time.

What difference does burning a DVD make?

The Void iso also uses the iso9660 File System and it boots fine.

Is there something different about the way the Vector iso is created that does not make it universally compatible?

Burning a DVD is NOT an option because that is wasteful especially when USB Flash drives can be used and the iso being offered for testing is only a Release Candidate.

Would using UNetbootin make a difference?

Another note, my Laptop is setup to use UEFI.

Using the Gnome Disk Utility, I captured the data you can see in the images below.

Can the parition type of the Vector ISO be changed?

I think you need "legacy boot".

I know I have gotten unetbootin to work in the past by making some manual edits, lemme experiment some with that.
