HowTo: Speed up SeaMonkey

SeaMonkey is compiled with pango for improved eastern language support; however, it's not needed for most western languages, and slows page-loading.

Test by running SeaMonkey without Pango:  place this shellscript in your path and start SM with it:

export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO

If it works for you, you can place this in your .bash_profile (if you don't have one, make it in your home directory):
export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1
Logout, then log back in. 

This cut rendering time in half for me (using the VL SM package).

I prefer to save the page and test with my local copy.

Another useful tweak is to disable ipv6.  Go to about:config, filter for network.dns.disableIPv6, right-click and change to true.

I have used Vector for months before I switched to another distro which at that time was more in the direction I was looking at. But, after that switch, I am still visiting the forums and reading about the developments for VL.
At that time, it was a very nice and fast distro for me, which was working out of the box, without any problems.

My point at that time was that I was looking for a distro in two versions; with everyting in it to have a working desktop, and one without, so you can make your own brew.

I do really like the VL package system with it's high compressed packages.
So, it is possible that I will give it a try again and switch back again some time

About those optimisations;
I have tested for hours and hours the time I used Firefox and the Suite (Seamonkey now).
Those settings were working very well for me.
As I remember, it was a difference of 20 percent and more that time....

Hi Lontronics! Just wanted to point out that we've been steadily working towards this possibility. In 5.8 Standard, you can already install a fully working base TUI system, without X, etc. I've used this to set up some lightweight intranet servers here at work on old hardware. What is not possible at the moment is to install X without XFCE.
