Not sure about vlc.Never saw a movie with subtitles on it

Yes, you need to load the sub at the same time you load the file. VLC has interesting advanced features and is nice for inet streams, but the ui is not friendly, actually i find it uncomfortable. But is a sure option if nothing else plays the file.

VLC plays CDs more reliably than Xine (sans video window). In fact, VLC is the only viable backup to XMMS for playing CDs, and is therefore an essential player in my book. One thing that may confuse you about VLC's media player applet is that there are duplicate "Next track" and "Previous track" buttons, and only one set works, the set of buttons in-line with the blue slider bullet, in the lower right corner. The valid buttons appear only after the CD has been recognized.

I sure hope not. Last thing we need is another adobe product dominating the market, pushing it's weird-ass closed formats down our throats.

That was my first reaction as well, but according to their press release, it is supposed to be "cross-platform, based on open standards". One can only hope.

Also, their software is unbelieveably bloated. The latest PDF reader for Windows from Adobe clocks in at 21MB. FoxIt Reader, which does much the same thing, is a mere 1.5MB download. Go figure that one!

cross-platform, based on open standards is vague enough.... What are open standards anyways? And how is it 'based' on it? I guess it's easier to use what's already there than it is to reinvent the wheel huh.

right, can't I just use a browser for that? why do I need some ugly player for that?

I can quote pretty much every line from that and make a comment of how it's not by definition a good thing for anyone but Adobe.
I can only read the announcement as a direct threat to anything open. Adobe is trying to push it's other products along with this new player and make every web developer believe they need to use it by using terms like "Rich Internet Applications". The web won't gain much except more wasted bandwidth. It's meant to make Adobe rich, not the web.

I Voted mplayer and xine.  And that's the order I use them.

I need xine to test my DVD menus, and mplayer for most everything else to include browser plugin.

I have been using MPlayer since the beginning of time (okay, since I installed VL4) and it has played pretty much everything that I've thrown at it. Haven't had to look elsewhere.

I'd vote MPlayer.

Would you consider audacious ?
For my 'very tight budget' system (128 - 256 MB RAM), I'm using audacious + vlc.
Both are gtk2 based, and they look uniform in gtk2 theme.

My system is a gtk2 only applications.
Thus I don't included the others that do not use gtk2
xmms - gtk1
mplayer - gtk1, I failed to compile the gtk2 version
xine - x11
gxine - gtk2, but feel short compared to vlc.
xfmedia - gtk2, but still alpha quality.
amarok - kde
kplayer - kde

XFCE user here because I want to keep my system light...I am using mplayer for everything and it has been able to play nearly every media without problems. 

I have never got a sound or a picture out of mplayer??

I am using totem, gxine and realplayer and will so in future. For musik only it's xmms.

mplayer without any gui and sonme frontend..

Mplayer is the fastest loading player,i believe that its better than xine engine.
