Artwork Update
« on: May 02, 2007, 07:23:36 pm »

I have added a yellow bubble prop to the Artwork repository. This can be used to make smilies, icons, and well, whatever your heart desires to use it for :)

You can find it here:

Sure you can.
I'm not a professional, without Gimp's scripts and plug-ins I'd be drawing squiggly stick figures  ;D

Any really good tutorials out there? The extent of my artistic ability is drawing a word bubble on a picture of the Norns, as you may have seen already.

Standard Hanumizzle response to that question: Tried Google?

The www.gimp.org site has a few. The main thing is having a project and playing...

Had an "LOL" moment over your "as you may have seen already" comment...well done - sense of humour is key!

Actually, I usually don't do that. Anyway, I'm a total n00b at image manipulation, so the only reason I didn't go right to Google is because I wouldn't know which tutorial is the best. I was wondering if anyone would say something like: "I cut my teeth on x, here's a link"

As stated by LLL Google is a great source to find tut's. I am placing a list of links that I have visited at one time or another. For whatever reason I have these bookmarked, so there must be something useful in them  :)
Hope something in these links will be of use to you as well.

Keine Sorge; das kann ich schon lesen...irgendwie intereßier' ich mich nicht für die Animation.

(I'm not that interested in animation anyway. :))

Things in the Gimp that I've found particularly useful, and a major mind-change for us MS-Paint self-taught hacks:

1) The built-in Help system is very well done; wonder what a button/feature does? Check the help!

2) Selection tools are powerful - select by lasso, colour, contiguous regions, etc.
- When you use them, have a look at the 'Select' menu of the image menu; being able to manipulate exactly what you want in an image is key.
- Also, note, in the Edit menu, that you can 'stroke' a selection - this lets you outline things, create shapes, etc.

3) Layers
- You have to play to understand the power. Consider selecting a region and then 'floating' (Select menu -> Float) it to its own layer.
- Change opacity, etc.
- You can reorder layers by dragging them.

4) Script-Fu and Filters
- Play with them to understand what they do.

I'm starting to realize the power of the 'History' view where you can jump back/forward many steps at a time, and there's so much more to learn...but it does get easier with time :)

Good luck - ask questions!

Yeah The Gimp is amazingly powerful but incredibly involved. Sat through a Gimp presentation a while back at our local Linux User's Group. I was amazed at what it can do but much of the stuff is very involved with sometimes sequential steps required to produce an effect - I suspect mastering the Gimp would take months of determined practise!

Is there anyway I can select an arbitrary area and alter the color throughout?

I say this because I want to draw a black and white 'corpse paint' mask on a picture of Karl Urban as Éomer.

You can use the path tool (just press B) Select the region you need using the bezier curves (is easy once you get it). The selection needs to be closed, so, when your selected region is almost complete, press Enter to close it. Then press "Make selection from path" button. Then you can go to Tools, Color Tools, Tone-Saturation... You can tweak the color of your selection from here.
Hope this help, not an expert like the folks here...

PS: My Gimp is in spanish, the names of the tools are translated by myself, you will find them...if your luck is big as the Moon. If the tool-names are well translated, I am the lucky guy. Sorry I do my best to help  ;)

Hello All:
I know sometimes you would all suspect me of being "gone fishin", as in lights are on but nobody home...BUT..try this one there was a post I remebered by a guest known as hanimal Nov. 16, 2006. There hanimal posted a very nice piture for a desktop possibility. It was not so much the piture that it is wondeful, but the way VL logo was made. Green...Can you all have a look at the VL logo and let me know what you think of it. As you may know by now I would like to associate VL with "GREEN" as in environmental. But that is me how about YOU? Thoughts...
BTW I am thinking about homepage!
Thanks for your time
regards
Darrell
