The reason I care, anyway, is because I can find out about new apps this way. I'm compiling giblib and feh as I type.
I see I also have easuter hooked on high-quality tr00 typesetting now...

I see I also have easuter hooked on high-quality tr00 typesetting now... Yep, my school assignments have a whole new look to them My maths and physics teachers are always complaining about Word (and some other MS app...can't remember the name now) not being the right tool for writing out "special" text, etc.... I have suggested TeXmacs because it has a Windows port, lets see how that catches on...

In fact, the American Mathematical Society even have their own particular LaTeX style. TeXmacs is actually meh for me. I don't even really use LyX at all; I just packaged it. I actually prefer to use LaTeX straight. It consumes far less resources than its frontends. What's even more important is that it mentally forces you to look at the content of your document alone. That makes it a lot easier for me to think about it. I don't like to worry about memory management when programming, and likewise I don't like to worry about formatting when typing up some document...

Typesetting Is anyone here *really* doing typesetting? The term here seems to be a substitute for word processing. Typesetting means taking text (not necessarily written by you), choosing a font and styles, and turning the text into professional-looking output. I have done a lot of this in Windows. Eventually I'll be using Scribus when the text engine is improved. --GrannyGeek

LaTeX (and arguably LyX) are both typesetters.

The nice thing about kuickshow is that its interface is very much uncluttered.

Well, I sort of used the term as a synonym for DTP (Desktop Publishing). I started with First Publisher, then Ventura Publisher 3 and 4 a long time ago, then the inevitable MS Publisher, then Pagemaker and a couple of others. I've just been toying with Scribus for a couple of years, because I haven't really needed to do any publishing tasks for a long time. Still, I can see it's potential.

Very! I like to use it to view digital photos: it's easy to scroll through them. Hmm, I should have put in gtkam for digital photos ...

I must mention that the wonderful image viewer/converter/editor Irfanview runs perfectly under Wine--plugins and all. (Not all plugins will work.) --GrannyGeek
