how do i install gz and gz2 packages

i have Soho 5.8 RC3

I don't know about .gz2, but for .gz packages you have to ungzip and untar them and then compile them.

Supose you have a file like cream.tar.gz.

Do the following;

gzip -d cream.tar.gz

and then

tar -xvf cream.tar.

That should give you a directory called /cream. Move to that in this way;

cd /cream

and then do the following (waiting for each step to complete before attempting the next, and some may take a while);

./configure

make

make install

That should do it.

usually tar.gz and tar.bz2 are source packages so after unpacking them, you have to ./configure && make install, but it's not always true.

To unpack tar.gz you can:

Code:
tar -zxvf cream-X.Y.tar.gz

To unpack tar.bz2 you can

Code:
tar -xjvf cream-X.Y.tar.bz2

for more info

man tar

then if there's a README, or  INSTALL file, there should explain dependencies, or way to install the package.

If there's no unmet dependency,

Code:
./configure

make

as root

Code:
make install
