Vector 6.0 forking from Slackware?
« on: May 19, 2007, 06:02:26 pm »

In recent reports it was said that the next version of Vector--version 6.0 would fork further away from Slackware. If this is true then what will be the end result? More support, repositories? New package management?

What gives?  :o

IIRC, the forking away was discussed mostly due to the older versions of xorg and gcc used by Slackware, which were criticized by many of our users as "ancient". However, slack-current has already removed these issues, so the need for a fork is mostly gone. If I missed any other possible forking issue, please post away.

It is probably fair to say that we've moved away somewhat over the years.

For example, we are using tukaani pkgtools. The principle of Markov chains (A.A. Markov 1856-1922) in LZMA compression remains bleeding-edge and unproven to many users of Slackware proper.

[Yes, it isn't nice to bite the hand that feeds you, but if you've been on #slackware in freenode, you'll understand. No offense to Patrick Volkerding! Ed.]
