I'm running VL 5.1 standard (my Packard Bell EasyOne 4512A, AMD K6-2 450MHz has only 64MB RAM so 5.8 was out of the question) and the TextUI loads fine but the X Server blackscreens (I don't think it crashes because I can get back to the CLI occasionally).

a quick Google search shows that the Trident X driver in general and the i7d in particular can be problematic so I've tried a couple of remedies—setting VideoRam 8192 and using the VESA driver instead of the Trident—neither of which worked.

I'm a Linux newbie and although I've learnt a lot trying to get this laptop to work—with a wide range of distros I might add—I might have missed something relatively obvious. all help or suggestions gratefully received...

Bigpaws has replied in your other thread on this subject - see http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3121.msg19341#msg19341

Since this post is basically a cross-post from the Installation and Updates forum, I'm going to lock this thread. Please confine discussion on this issue to the thread in the Installation and Updates board. Thanks very much. :-)

Cheers,
John
