Hi everyone,

I have a ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X card in this computer of mine.  I just installed VL 5.8 SOHO and during installation it asked me which driver I want.  There were 3 drivers listed, one was prorietary, other was an open-source raedon driver, and the third one was an open-source ATI driver.  I choose the ATI driver, but it kept going back to the same screen (with the three drivers).  So I chose the raedon and after going through some other options, it tried to test the configuration and it said that there is something wrong with my xorg.conf.  When I try to startx, it fails.  The error logs say:

(ww) Radeon: Chipset "radeon" in Device section "Card0" isn't valid for this driver.
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
No screens found

I tried the propietary driver as well, and I get the same error/problem.  Any ideas what to do?

BTW, here's my xorg.conf from Ubuntu Feisty that is on the same machine (it works).  Thanks in advance.

Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

You could manually edit your xorg.conf in VL (using nano, mc editor, vim, etc...) replacing the exisiting 'DEVICE' section with the one from the xorg.conf you posted:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Thanks, that works.

I also had to change the horizontal and vertical syncs to be able to log into X at 1600x1200.

BTW, the only thing better than the 5.8 Standard is the 5.8 SOHO.

Glad to hear that it worked for you with the refresh rates adjusted. Cheers!!

It could also be said that: the only thing better than the 5.8 SOHO is the 5.8 Standard. Wink Grin
