VLSOHO 5.8 final; USB printer support?

I have a lexmark Z735, well that is beyond the point; I went to KDE control center>peripherals>printers>add new printer>select valid detected port, only to find that there was no entry under USB, and my printer is on and plugged in. I tried changing the rc.modules file, unremarking base usb support and usb printer support (/sbin/modprobe uhci; /sbin/modprobe usb-uhci; /sbin/modprobe usb-ohci; /sbin/modprobe printer) when this didn't work, after I rebooted I tried at the prompt with root privileges modprobe uhci; modprobe usb-uhci; and modprobe usb-ohci, each time getting the ominous error message: module not found. is it the way usb support in the kernel is compiled or is there anything I can do without recompiling the kernel?

Any support necessary to boot from anything possible was included in the kernel, so yes, basic USB support is in there. Udev should load the rest of them if it detects the printer. Open up a terminal as root and run "udevmonitor", then leave it running and plug in the printer to see if it is recognized and necessary modules loaded.

Lexmark printers are often problematic in Linux. According to
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-Z735 , the Z735 is a paperweight.

However, many Lexmarks that don't have Linux drivers can be made to work following the steps described here:

Read all the way to the end of the topic. Let us know if it works for you. I have a Lexmark X1270 multifunction printer doing fine in Linux as a printer. The scanner part doesn't work and to my knowledge, there is no workaround. But the USB printer is no problem. I followed the steps described above.

lanerman211: the easier way to do the printer config thing is with System, CUPS Pirnter Configuration.

Than you for your responses. Based on the information I gleaned I was able to successfully configure a different printer, a HP Photosmart D5160, that suited my needs better, and yes, interfacing with the CUPS server directly was a better way. I did need to install hpijs and hplip for it to work properly or at least install correctly using system > administration > CUPS printer administration. Something I learned as a hardware tech: if something doen't work right; replace it.
