Javisst! I packaged texlive and texlive-doc both. You'll need to make sure that the testing repo is enabled in slapt-getrc, however.
As for the editor component, I'm not sure what you're asking for. Vim handles this task very well, and I believe Kate has support for LaTeX. Let me know if you want a specific editor.

Will also look at those editors, doesnt matter which editor, just want it to support latex.

I think kile is a good program. It will handle a latex project, and has some nice tools and wizards. It's worth a try...

There are lots of latex editors, from vim or emacs with their appropiate plugins (vim latexsuite and auctex IIRC), to Lyx and kile(kde) Lyx ( http://www.lyx.org/) is a little more WYSIWYG than others. |

to activate testing repo i go to gslapt, then preferences and then sources? dont see anything with "testing" in the URL, doyou mean "extra"?

i cant find Lyx, kile or any emac plugin in gslapt, only managed to find emacs. Where are they?

emacs: You should add testing repositories manually: ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.8/testing I'm afraid emacs plugins cannot be installed through package managers, and for sure we don't have any in our repositories. you can look for info about installing emacs plugins in emacs wiki. thanks, found lyx now it seems to work, not that kind of editor I was looking for though, want it to save as pdf. will look at emacs wiki to try to install plugin for Latex. Dont know what vim is so I leave it as you wanted  thanks for help! |

I don't know much about lyx. If it will save in ps format (PostScript format), you can use ps2pdf to convert the ps file to pdf. ps2pdf comes with VL and uses Ghostscript to create PDF files from ps. I haven't used it, so I have no opinion about how good it is. --GrannyGeek |

yw  IIRC LyX lets you save the docs in pdf format. vim, is a text editor (the most powerful editor I've seen). You probably have it already installed as it's the default editor in unix/linux. If you plan to use an editor for long time, I encourage you to learn vim or emacs (both are extensible and can be used through ssh). Vim is a modal text editor, so at first it's quite strange, but IMO it's worth the time learning it. |

There's an option to export to PDF, or you can produce a LaTeX file from the LyX document and then run pdflatex to convert. Personally, I'd rather use LaTeX straight. |
