I hate to say this, but that chat applet rots.
well, I think every java applet does. It will slow down almost every system a lot. But looks like is the only solution, if we want to integrate irc with the forum. Anyway, a java applet is easy to integrate, we just need to paste the code on this page. The chat applet is not Java-based. It is Flash-based. Java isn't always that bad actually. Ops! Sorry, I thougth you was talking about the one moe suggested to replace the current. We are looking for an irc client that can connect with #vectorlinux at freenode. I am...

Then I am missing something, when I go to here http://www.jwirc.com/chat.html or here http://java.freenode.net/freenode/pjirc/ I get the Sun logo and a java console is opened, sorry if I am wrong

FWIW and IMO, flash sucks. That's why I have flashblock on my SeaMonkey, one of the very few extensions I actually use...

So far CGI:IRC is the lightest-weight web client I can find: http://cgiirc.org/ - I'm just not sure about freenode support but it sure seems like it'll do it without any problems.

that code works from here! I guess we could use it embebed on the forum, should be something like elseif ($_GET["action"]=="chat") { echo ' //moe´s html goes here '; }
in the smf index.php, what do you think? great idea.

Seems like the perfect gem for hanu - lightweight, fast, no fancy frills, written in perl Try: http://www.ircatwork.com/

Glad to see this discussion. I logged into the chat room once and it ran slower than molasses running uphill in the wintertime. I logged out again. Of course, since it's just an IRC channel I can use xchat and not go in through the browser, but... a fast browser-based interface that doesn't use Flash or Java sounds great to me. Perl is good for you -Cait

Dang.. I can't access that from my work comp. (damn proxy filters) But I guess it would be good, so long as it can be embedded in a page here at the forums, that way the proxy wont block me either

It's obviously server-side anyway." The second thing I thought was: "There's no way this can have decent real time performance." And that's unfortunately true...
