Is it just me or did someone do some serious trimming on the How To section of the forum. I went hunting for a BERYL How To I thought was in there and there are only a handful of How To's left.

I noticed that too ... it's not just the How To section, though. A vast number of topics (with some really useful information) are missing in lots of sections: Artwork, Web & Internet, Kernel, Security Advisories, Distro Development ... just about everywhere.

Apparently somebody "cleaned up" old posts . I'm pretty sad about all the info that's been lost, I'll think twice before writing a long HOWTO again. There wasn't useful info in just the howto's though, a lot of problems have been solved since we got on this forum. These posts might have been very useful for others in the future. Sure we can clean up the lounge every now and then, and perhaps the old announcements / bugreport threads for beta's. But current problem solving would be easier if solved problems don't get pruned. OTOH I understand sometimes the trash needs to be taken out.

Aye, JohnB316 said he has backups of the forum, so hopefully this is "fix-able".

Another vote for John figuring out a way to restore the old stuff.
I have some HOWTOs to write (i.e.: Hebrew support now that most of the packaging is done) but I'd hate to see them vanish into thin air.
BTW, does the forum support non-Latin character sets? A Hebrew howto should be offered in Hebrew as well as English. A majority of Israelis do speak English but by no means all.
All the best, Cait

In another post Vector said he updated the forum to the latest, stable version. Perhaps the missing posts are a casualty to that process.

Good grief! This is a disaster, if the HowTo's and other messages are lost. I hope they can be replaced. --GrannyGeek

lagagnon had a good Howto about final annoyances and bugs in VL 5.8 that I would like to see recovered. Often I summarize an issue, with resolution, for future reference, in case I don't remember the solution. I often use the search engine to research my own issues again, just because I need to know exactly what I did to fix things before. So, with so many forum issues thus deleted, I may have to start all over on some things. Or ask to be reminded.

Granny, I took a full backup of the forum on Saturday evening before the forum software was updated. I'm hoping that we'll be able to recover stuff from that backup. We'll keep folks posted. Thanks for understanding, John

You shouldnt erase valuable data. This forum and the ones before it are vector's documentation...the howto on the fixing of bugs.
