Is Octave complete in itself or does it need extra libraries? I've not been able to get it to run so far.

What errors do you get when running it in a terminal?

Thanks for replying.

It seems to be missing a file; liblapack.so.3.

Thanks for replying.

There's no output. Does that mean I'm missing a package?

Yeah, try installing lapack from the repo, using:

Code:
slapt-get --install lapack

This is most likely a missing depepndecy in the GNUPlot package.

Thanks, but it may have to wait until I've got enough free online time for a 9 MB download(I'm on dialup).

I'm admittedly not familiar with slapt-get, but it didn't find the lapack file. I downloaded lapack from source and found I was unable to complile it (no configure etc.).

Do you have the testing repository enabled (and did you refresh the package list)?
If you want to download the lapack and blas packages manually, then read the announcement here:

No, I didn't do either of those things. I may try it before downloading those sources though, that way I'm learning more about how Linux works. Thanks for replying.

Yeah, building both blas and lapack is a sticky business (aside from needing the fortran compiler, the provided Makefiles need to be extensively modified so that shared libraries can be built).
