Problems with ALSA

I am kinda new to linux.

I have had VL 5.0 installed on my computer, everything worked just fine, exept for that was a bit old, so I thought that I might get a better software, and tried FC 6. Now, it didnt really work, couldnt open media and such. So I decided to go back to VL 5.0. Now, VL 5.0 worked, exept for sound had some new problems. I thought it was just the CD I used (it has like million scraches and a menu of differend kind of drinks from past five years on it.) So, I decided to try some other VL version.

Okey, so I installed VL 5.8 SOHO just the other day.
Everything else works just fine, exept for there still seems to be some problems with alsa. Looks like the same problem.
First of all, when I installed VL 5.8 SOHO, alsa says it didnt find my soundcard or legacy cards. However, if I change soundcard from alsa, there is a soundcard avaible to be chosen. (Now, I think this has happened to me always when installing VL, and sound has worked before )

Something I have found out this far:
-there is no such directory as /dev/dsp.
-It always says something like "Couldnt open default sound device, default is not a device. Running none device." or something like that at startup.

I would really appriciate your help. (And I also hope I posted this in the right place, if not, please just move it to right place.)

Well, to start with, what kind of sound card do you have?

Yes, but you must provide more information as hanumizzle suggests. We need to know the exact make and model of the soundcard and we need to know if the kernel detects the soundcard.

Run this command (as root in a terminal):

lspci

and post the output to this thread.

EDIT: Also post the output of "lsmod" so we can see what audio modules have actually been loaded.

Okey, I dont have any internet connection on that PC that I have issues with... (Since, I need internetconnection to get internetconnection. ) and I didnt find any working transferdevices, so I wrote all down manually...pen and paper. There might be typos.

First of all, alsaconf gives list of soundcards: AZT2320        AZT1008 SOUND DEVICE (you didnt ask for that, but, well, I thod it might help)

you could try as root:

modprobe snd-azt2320

If the module is inserted properly, you can re-run alsaconf and the script should configure the card for you.

Great! Enjoy VL  I used to have an Aztech card too in my old pentium-s, the motherboard died
