hi everyone,

I just installed VL (VL-standard-5.8 gold) and so far its been real cool, but i cant figure out how to get my modem working. Its a Speedtouch 330, from what I've seen on all the other forums, they have have a bit of a reputation in the Linux community.

I got it working on a fedora core 5 install that i had a few months back. The method that i used is here. I used the pppoe variant (the one that involves installing the br2684ctl bridge utility).

There was a post in the forums about the modem, but it referred to an external link which is no longer available, and the post itself is gone.

I tried the speedtouch-usb and the speedtouch-conf scripts, but they did not not work.

Now i'm going to try the method given here but i have a few questions about it.

  • first up (the big one), will it work?
  • second, are the vector kernels built with speedtouch support or will i have to re-compile?
  • can the linux-atm and ppp packages be turned into tlz archives so that they can be managed through gslapt?

if i failed to give any useful details then please tell me (along with how to get it) and ill post it here.

I really like vector, and don't want to log into windows every time i want to check my email or get xfce themes. Any help is appreciated.  Smiley

Google slackware Speedtouch 330

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showproduct.php/product/168

http://www.jayscott.co.uk/docs/speedtouch.html

http://steve-parker.org/speedtouchconf/

One of those should get you going.

Thanks for the help, but I've already seen (and tried) these. The problem is that these tutorials are for pppoa only whereas i require one for pppoe. Also some of the tutorials are for the 2.4 series of kernels not for the 2.6, which does not need /usr/sbin/modem_run.

the speedtouchconf script doesn't work either, it gets the drivers built, uploads the firmware and starts to connect, but fails to do so (my guess is it uses pppoa). It also relies on modem_run, and so is buggy with 2.6 kernels.

btw, sorry for the late reply, had to get my pc repaired.

Take a look at your logs so guessing is not needed.

Your logs are in /var/log

The logs are confirming a pppoa connection. You are getting connected to
the ISP. You are not keeping a connection. Did you setup the username
and password if they are needed?

Check /var/log/messages you are looking for the reason of the hangup.

If you can not find a reason, contact your ISP explain that you are troubleshooting a
connection(usually mentioning linux will not help) their logs may tell you more. Like a
bad username/password combination.

alright, i'll try that out. I'm sure the username and password are correct, they're the same that i used on fedora core 5, and continue to use on windows.

EDIT:
The ISP wasn't much help. They said they'd send someone over, but i doubt he'll know what Linux is. I don't think that the ISP requires a pppoa connection, the cd that i got from the isp (for windows) installs drivers for a pppoe connection.

I removed all settings done by speedtouchconf, built the drivers manually, put the firmware in /etc/speedtouch/ and ran speedtouch-setup with the --pppoe switch, still no luck.
what i got after running speedtouch-start was this:

Code:
Starting ADSL connection...
using channel 584
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/4
pppoe: option requires an argument -- I
Usage: pppoe [options]
Options:
   -I if_name     -- Specify interface (default eth0.)
-D filename    -- Log debugging information in filename.
-T timeout     -- Specify inactivity timeout in seconds.
-t timeout     -- Initial timeout for discovery packets in seconds

-U             -- Use Host-Unique to allow multiple PPPoE sessions.
-s             -- Use synchronous PPP encapsulation.
-m MSS         -- Clamp incoming and outgoing MSS options.
   -p pidfile     -- Write process-ID to pidfile.
-e sess:mac    -- Skip discovery phase; use existing session.
-n             -- Do not open discovery socket.
   -k             -- Kill a session with PADT (requires -e)
-d             -- Perform discovery, print session info and exit.
-f disc:sess   -- Set Ethernet frame types (hex).
   -h             -- Print usage information.

Are the s and I switches defined somewhere? How about using the -D switch to
get an output for debugging.

The -s switch should be -s <service name> -I <NIC card name (eth0)> and
the -D <file name(failppp0)>.

This person has it running:

thanks for all the help so far. hope I'm not over staying my welcome

EDIT:
I've just read some new docs, and i'm going to start solving this thing from the beginning using a new method (eliminate the use for modem_run and have the kernel load the firmware at boot time).

i just remembered, vector is installed on hdb, with windows on hda. I wrote lilo to hdb, and i use the cd to boot into vector, would that interfere in loading the drivers in any way?

after checking out all the documents i have a rough idea of what to do, so here's the new plan

  • Install the drivers
the two options for this are to either re-compile the kernel or compile the module.
  • Install the firmware and load it to the modem
once again two options here, use modem_run or the hotplug facility of 2.6.* kernels. This part should be fairly easy either way
  • prepare the config files
    these would be /etc/pap-secrets, /etc/chap-secrets, and /etc/ppp/peers/adsl
  • run "pppd call adsl" and start praying

I've decided to re-compile and try out hotplugging the firmware. I'm using the source from kernel.org(2.6.21.5). Are there any vector specific patches i should be aware of?. Once the drivers are done and the firmware is loaded, then i can concentrate on the configuration alone.

Stage one and two done, kernel compiled successfully (sort of,  i get a message at boot that it failed at loading modules, but it all runs normally) and it loads the firmware.
Now on to configuration.
