You will need to install one of the older versions of VL. Version 5.8 requires more than 2GB to install.

You can use VL 4.0
Here are recommended specs for you to check: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/vectorlinux/docs/miscellaneous/version_table_2.html

I know for a fact that it work find on an old pentium which I have (2 GB hard drive and currently 96 MB RAM (when I first installed it it only had 16 MB RAM and still ran OK)).

It was my first experience with Linux too -- so depending on how much you want to make it work - should be doable.

Vector Linux 5.1 will run brilliantly on your machine.  You can shoehorn 5.8 Standard into 2GB.  1.8GB is about the minimum.  You can then slim it down further by removing packages you don't need.  You'll need to install just the very basic, required stuff plus X (no optional packs at all), remove software you don't need, and then add anything you must have from Extra out of the repository.

My Toshiba Libretto SS1010 has a 2.1GB hard drive with 100MB taken up by a hibernation partition, 128MB for swap, 65MB for Damn Small Linux, and I still have VL 5.8 Standard installed.  It took some work but it can be done.

We need to know the type of card, and the exact make and model of your card. The output of this commands as root will be useful:

Code:
# lspci
# lsmod

Did you checked the mixer levels? Try to run alsamixer and take a look. You can unmute the channels with "M".
If that not work, probably the wrong module is being inserted in the kernel. Looks like you have an ISA card, can you provide the exact make and model? With that info we can find the proper module for it.

With what application did you try to play the CD?

Is the CD mixer level unmuted and raised above zero? (Check in your favorite mixer application.)

Have you considered ripping audio tracks to MP3 or Ogg?
