The other request for R for statistical and scientific computing reminded of Gnu Octave.
This is a Matlab-like environment for mathematical stuff (and statistical, and lots more).
I'm currently using Matlab for Linux, though it is proprietary software.
Apparently, Octave is almost completely compatible with Matlab, which is great.

Compiling Octave is a bitch. I needed lapack, fftw, and a few other libraries as well as the GNU Fortran compiler from Slackware. What a mess. I just hope it runs without the Fortran library after I compile it. Try again I guess... |

I noticed fftw and lapack, but not the netlib BLAS implementation. Hopefully, that's optimized.

Hello,
I compiled Octave, R and octplot packages and uploaded them on my part on repo. I am currently, preparing a set of other mathematical, chemistry and bioinformatics tools and libraries that I am uploading on VL repo.
