That's too bad, Easuter.

Out of curiosity, what's your hardware?

I've been using cpu frequency scaling also, in hopes of making my box a little more green.

I found this:
Quote
I tried kernel 2.6.20-rc1-mm1 with the "tickless" option on my P3/933
but it has now for the second time in a row caused a system freeze
as soon as I left the system idle for a couple of hours.
from:
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0612.2/0838.html

Also found a reference claiming this was buggy pre-2.6.21: http://www.bughost.org/pipermail/power/2007-May.txt.gz

I've used it on some 2.6.22-rc kernels and maybe a 2.6.21, with Pentium4 2.8GHz

This is a couple months out of date, but there's a discussion of the SD and CFS schedulers here:
http://kerneltrap.org/node/8082

CFS is planned for 2.6.23.  (By the way, 2.6.22 came out a couple days ago ... CK's got a patchset for it in testing.

Yeah, the 2.6.21 CK patched kernel was just added to the repo, lol :)

Its a pity this...I can really understand why Con Kolivas got so pissed off, the CFS scheduler will end up implementing many of his ideas... ::)

A nice interview with Con explaining his experiences and decision.

Well even worse.  He's been busting his butt trying to get the kernel bigwigs to use his code for a long time.  Then the new CFS scheduler (with his ideas and code) is plunked into mainstream without nearly the same testing and proven success of the CK code.  What a slap in the face.

Thanks.  A very good (and revealing) read.

I guess I'll stay with the 2.6.21 and 2.6.22 kernels for a while, unless someone else decides to maintain the ck patchset.  I've noticed too much of an improvement with his patches, to want to run a kernel without them.  People like Con Kolivas are too rare;  I can't help but think there's something very wrong when they get turned off like this ...  :'(

$ uname -o

Sounds like someone hit a nerve there!

Here's a thread on cpu schedulers and renicing X:
