I just read the release announcement for Slackware 12 (http://www.slackware.com/announce/12.0.php). Mr. PV makes it sound pretty good so I suspect that VL 6 will reflect the customary "improvements" over Slackware. I've looked at a few of the early VL 6s but am excited about the possibilities.

I've only had a quick look at it, but Slack 12 has had a couple of reviews on Distrowatch;

and this one;

Both seem positive but emphasise that it's not a beginners' distribution.

I would agree but know that a beginner with determination can use Slackware because I have done so. I just find VL and its associated community a much more pleasant experience.

I actually started with Slackware, 10.0 to be precise. You're word choice summed me up pretty well mikecindi, a beginner with determination, mainly to learn Linux. I got board of configing (esp. after playing with Arch Base), but I wanted the same SW foundation I had come to love. As a result I've been a Vectorite since 5.0.1SOHO and use Vector as my primary OS in tandum with the occational WinXP. I remember being unimpress with MiniSlack, though it was probably a Reiser4 issue, and though it seems to be quite a solid Slackware spinoff nowadays, it just doesn't have that Vector magic for me, and I've come to find the VL forum such a pleasant place as well.  Smiley

I did try to install slackware 12 two days ago, but was unsuccessful twice due to the failure or error message in writing lilo to MBR. This was very dissapointing to me. Zenwalk and the newest VL 5.8 Gold worked great on that same machine with the install.

I have tried liloconfig, etc, with no success. I gave up on that. I am still with Linux Mint now - One of my new favorites, but I hunger to be back with VL.

VL 5.8 Gold is soon coming back on my systems. I like the KISS mentality and miss that about VL. Slack 12 seems promising, but if I cannot install it to test it out, I cannot be impressed. I like the fact that Pat has finally gone with the 2.6 kernel and with and up to date xorg 7.2... This was what inspired me the most to try it out.

All I can ask is: When is VL 6 coming out? That is my most awaited distro for months now.. Or since last year.

Thanks Moe for the xorg upgrade guide again. VL forever.

Very true; nothing wrong with Slack, but that sums up why I spend a lot more time booted into VL.

Re VL 6, I just noticed that Uelsk8s has a new iso up ...
