« on: July 08, 2007, 11:32:55 am »
Hello everybody!I have finished to install VL.(15 min ago) I'm new in Linux,i want to learn it but for the moment i already have a problem. When i try to load VL in graphical mode i receive this error: Recent X-Window was respawned too short. What should i do? I have an amd k6, 450 MHz,96 MB RAM,HDD 80 GB and VL version is 5.1.

I'm not sure if this makes sense, but when I had problems with the graphical mode not starting, I ran xorgconfig as root.
Type "su", then the root password, then "xorgconfig".

This nice utility will ask you questions about your graphic card, keyboard, mouse, and monitor (more or less the same ones that were asked during the install but a bit more specific. It's handy if you have your monitor's manual at hand to set the Horiz. and Vert. frequency options.

After that the problem was solved for me.

Usually I get that message when the resolution and depth on xorg.conf are not supporter by the card or by the driver. Try changing the resolutions and depth on xorg.conf to a lower value. Using the "vesa" driver could be a safe choice too, until you find the rigth solution. You will need to check your make and model of your video card and see if the proper driver is setted. As wcs suggested, the proper values for your monitor refresh rates are a good info to have.
I used to have an nvidia card and it didnt work to nice resolutions and depth until I installed the propietarie drivers from the nvidia web site.
