I was going to kill an application with ctrl alt esc when it decided to come to life. So I clicked on an open area of the desktop to get rid of the skull and crossbones. Now I have no icons or background. How do I fix this?

Are you using Xfce or KDE?

If Xfce, go to this thread: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3407.msg21436#msg21436 and go to the 9th post down, by M0E-lnx, and follow his instructions.

If KDE, can you get the main menu and open the KControl?  If so you should be able to fix things from there.

Um, next time, you can deactivate XKill by right-clicking the mouse.

xfdesktop
was the solution given.
It turned out to be even easier than that. Just go to the Vector icon on the panel select Settings >> Desktop Settings >> Allow Xfce to manage the desktop

Well, InTheWoods, I'm glad it worked out.  Sorry about directing you to a more-difficult-than-necessary solution.
