Backing up a install / Disc image.
« on: July 09, 2007, 04:53:48 pm »

I was wondering if it's possible to install a copy of VL 5.8 on a partition.  Configure it to my liking.  Then boot to another partition and archive the partition with the fresh install.

I think this might be a nice option since packagers need to constantly do clean installs to build quality packages.  It's not that VL is hard to install.  But setting the BIOS to boot from CD, then installing, configuring then installing needed tools and templates is getting old.

I'd much rather pop in a CD and have a clean install the way I need it within a few minutes.

And could this method possibly have adverse side affects to the packages I build?

you can make a dir and extract the packages and bulks into that dir and chroot into it to build packages

I've done it that way and could get used to it, but getting the appropriate deps in place is something I seem to be "all thumbs" at.  It just seems too complex for me to be productive.  I like having slapt-get do all the leg work for me.  Now if slapt-get could work within the chroot enviorment, I'd be a happy camper.

did you try slapt-get from the chroot?
I use it here with no problems.

*Smacks Head*  You can freak'n do that???

I just assumed since the chroot "install" wasn't configured there would be no services, network, etc.  I thought about trying it a couple of times, but was afraid it would somehow corrupt something.

So your saying I can extract the install .tlz packages.  Enter the chroot  environment and slapt-get won't have a clue?
