How to activate numlock  on startup ?

I ssued the command    'slapt-get --install numlockx'  as root.  This installed numlockx but does'nt work

reissue of the same command gives the follwowing output  --   numlockx is already the newest version.  What went wrong ?

Hi ramesh

I believe you can add this line to your /etc/X11/xinitrc file:

Code:
numlockx on

I haven’t tested this, but if you try it, let me know how it works.

To add to the thread, this question has been answered before. If you are using KDE, you don't need to install numlockx. There is a setting in the Control Center for the Keyboard that will automatically turn on the Num Lock key at startup.

you will need to install the numlockx package

open a terminal then su to root then type "slapt-get --update" when that completes type "slapt-get --install numlockx"

Ramesh, in future posts please state what version you are using, I don't want to have to keep asking (HINT: you can also put this info in your signature).

1) did "numlockx on" turn on the numlock?

2) if so, have you added this command to the end of /etc/X11/xinitrc ?

ramesh,

If you are using Xfce, you can add numlockx to your "Autostarted Applications."  Go to the main menu, then "Settings," then "Autostarted Applications."  A dialog box will appear.  Click "Add" and type in "numlockx" where it says "Command:".  You'll also need to give it a name.  If you do this, numlockx will start when you log in (this assumes you have numlockx installed).

This may not be the best solution, but it should work.

He can add it all he wants, but if just "numlockx on" from a terminal doesn't work there's no reason why it will work when called from a script.

Well I'll be... I don't understand why that works if "numlockx on" doesn't work, but I just want to say: "Sorry, I was wrong".

Hey The Headacher,

I re-read  the thread, then I put that line in my xinitrc file, and naturally, it worked.  So I don't understand what's going on either.  Huh
