You should at least have the 'extra', 'patches' and 'packages' repository enabled. More recent (perhaps buggy, but usually not) packages can be found in the 'testing' repository. I strongly recommend against using "upgrade all packages", especially if you have the 'testing' repository enabled.

Most music on my soundcloud page was arranged in programs running on VL.

Add these lines (if they're not there) to your /etc/slapt-get/slaptgetrc file

EDIT: Corrected the sources for ftp:

Quote
SOURCE=ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.8/patches/
SOURCE=ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.8/extra/
SOURCE=ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.8/testing/

or simply open gslapt, go to Edit, Preferences, Sources, and where it says ADD write:
Quote
repeating for the other repositories that you want to have enabled.

It might be better to add "testing" as a source, but not enable it, unless you want a specific package in there, or if something you want to install has a dependency that is in the "testing" repository.

Which method did you use to add the repositories?  I would suggest using the 'gslapt' method in which case you will not be using the prefix 'SOURCE=' since that it already provided for you.  If you would like, you can also substitute 'http' for 'ftp' as that will work as well (I tend to use http protocol repos).  HTH

My mistake. Sorry.
The sources I had previously listed were right for http, but not for ftp.

I've corrected them above, so you should have no problems now, if you copy and paste them into the file or into the ADD line in Gslapt Preferences (without "SOURCE=" if you do it in gslapt, as newtor said).
