Hi

I have just installed VL 5.1 Standard on my P4 machine and I am having problems with the network card, an onboard SiS900. The installation routine appears to find it and I choose DHCP, but when I boot I get a failed message at the "Setting up basic internet" stage, and when I try to access the internet there is no connection. I tried disabling the firewall at boot, but it made no difference.

Strange thing is, I have installed VL 4.0 on this same machine in the past and the network worked fine, and I have 5.8 Gold on it now and that works fine too.

In a terminal as root I typed lspci and I could see the SiS900 listed. But when I type dmesg | grep eth0 I get no output. And ifconfig shows the loopback adaptor but not the SiS900.

Any ideas what should I do next?

Thanks

What does your /etc/modprobe.conf file contain?

Thanks.

modprobe.conf contains:

alias eth0 disabled
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.5 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

alias eth0 disabled

I think you need to replace the "disabled" with the module (sis900?) for your network card.
