Partition overflow, now everthing stuck
« on: July 22, 2007, 06:23:34 am »
Hello together,
I managed to overflow my home partition and the system frooze.
Now when I reboot I can log into my account and XFCE but according to the panel there is no partition mounted, applications tell me there is no space and refuse to work and the desktop is partially messed. I ereased some files with the root account, so the space should be there again. Thunar shows the files and directories.
But I can not use VASM, I can not shut down, there is no connection to the net (I use now my testing partition)
It would be gratefull if somebody could give me a hint how to clear this mess and to have access to the desktop again.
Nice weekend,
Carsten

Welll that sort of mess will occur with any OS if you fill a partition that is being used. The only thing I can suggest is to use a LiveCD (Vector, Slax, Knoppix, even Ubuntu), mount your home partition and start deleting files you do not need. The other thing you should then do is increase the size of that home partition - to do that run gparted (also found on most LiveCD's).

I tried to re-partition with Gparted Live CD. For some reason it ended with a blank hard drive >:(
But at least I can make a clean setup now from scrap (and this time I will even put away with Windoof  98)
