Difference between Standard and GOLD?
« on: July 24, 2007, 05:22:15 am »

I currently have 5.8 Standard running on my laptop, installed from an old CD that I burned when 5.8 first came out.  5.8 GOLD sounds more whizzy but I cannot find anywhere on the website how different it is from my original 5.8 Standard.  Is it worth moving up to it before I get too settled into this Standard one?  Can anyone tell me the difference?

It's possible you have one of the Release Candidates... Type: cat /etc/vector-version to find the actual version you're using.

Vector Linux 5.8 Standard 12-16-2006.  I just put 5.8 SOHO on my desktop, and that seems to be whizzier.  I installed Xfce 4.4 and it makes my dual-boot XP feel like wading through treacle!  I think I will extend my partition a bit on the laptop and put that on it running Xfce too.  I couldn't upgrade Xfce to 4.4 on the laptop because of glibc, so this will enable me to forge ahead, although I do not want KDE.  Thanks for the clues.

SOHO seemed faster than Standard?  Is your laptop fairly endowed as far as memory and processor speed go?

Incidentally, I also found that SOHO seemed snappier than Standard after a fresh install...
Of course, this is completely subjective and probably contaminated by the placebo effect.

After a while, though, KDE started showing its weight.
Now I'm back at standard, but I wondered if xfce in SOHO wouldn't be faster than in Standard.

If that is true, or why that should be the case, I have no idea. Any performance improvements in SOHO?

That explains it!
Hope to get more of that kernel magic in future versions of VL.  ;)

Thank you.

IIRC, the 2.6.19.2 upgrade kernel for Standard was based on that config, too.
