Thanks!  I'm downloading it now.

I fully understand that this is RC1.8 or something like that, not a true RC2.  I just want to see if it will install and run on my Toshiba laptops.  If not I suspect I'm causing more work for nightflier and probably for me to troubleshoot what changed since Beta 5.

No joy with rc2 either though the failure was a little different.

This time the installer went fine through the first part.  After reboot the part where it probes the hardware failed and the system hung there rather than letting me do a manual configuration.  I tried to boot into the new but unconfigured installation and it hung on settting up localhost.  I may try to boot into it again in single user mode and see if I can get through the network configuration and get it to go further.

Yep.  Beta 5 installs and boots up perfectly well.

I did manage to boot RC2 in single user mode.  I then did the remaining configuration steps (netconfig, alsaconf, X, etc...) and had no problem doing any of it.  I rebooted, trying both tui (run level 2) and run level 4.  The result is the same:  it hangs at configuring localhost even though the network is now configured normally.  In addition when it performs coldplugging it does produce a number of errors (permissions, files not found, etc...) and hangs for quite a while before moving on to the rest.  This doesn't happen on SOHO, what I'm running now.

It looks like you still have some issues to work through.  Let me know if I can test anything else.

I could not get ANY of the VL-Light RC's to work ...
I installed them fine but after install boot would stop at "Setting up Modules" ...
So I installed the Beta 5 release and low and behold it boots up fine  Grin
