standard install + upgrade = xfce doesn't start
« on: July 28, 2007, 08:15:08 am »

I installed the standard gold version and it was all right. I tried to upgrade the system with gslapt with the standard mirrors but now the login screen loops and xfce doesn't start :'(

upgrade the system with gslapt
do you mean you upgrade all the app?
if yes, it is not a good idea to upgrade all. It will probally crash you system.
can you login as root?

to add to hata_ph's reply:

My understanding is that, at present, the 'upgrade distro' option (i.e. get all updates to all packages, automatically) is not working as expected.  Steps are being taken to fix this issue so that an 'upgrade distro' action works as expected (i.e. your entire distro is upgraded to current within the release version) without ill effect.  My guess is that the easiest way of getting back a normal install is to re-install from cd/iso and then upgrade components manually.

I think there might be one package that is an exception but I'm not totally sure.  I remember a post from caitlyn regarding a package that gets upgraded in 'distro upgrade' that should not be else it causes major problems because it's a major component/library (glibc, gtk, ?something?).

thanks both!
then I will reinstall the system without upgrade all packages.
I think it's a problem with X or xfce because the text mode doesn't gives errors

Here's a discussion about the repo and dist-upgrade. It works pretty well, only wifiradar would break, but there is a rebuilt package now:

Did you have the patches repository enabled?  It isn't by default in Standard (known bug) and needs to be for a:

Quote
slapt-get --update
slapt-get --upgrade

or the equivalent in gslapt to work properly.  See: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3681.0 for more info.

My working VL copy has been upgraded this way since a few days after initial release on a regular basis.  The only current problems are:

1.  New abiword-plugins package requires aiksaurus, which isn't in the repository.  It just won't upgrade but it also won't break things.

2.  wifi-radar -- my bad as the package isn't named the same as the old one.  I need to correct this.  For right now do the following:

Quote
removepkg wifiradar
slapt-get --install wifi-radar

That will get you the nice, new 1.9.8 version.
