Alrighty, updated both xinelib and gcrypt.  Tried running xine, got the following:

Code: [Select]
media:$ xine
xine: error while loading shared libraries: libxine.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Not sure why.

Incidentally, I'm quite happy to move this thing over to xfce instead of kde - I'm just not sure what I do to start xfce instead of kde at startup (well, I've got a fair idea, I'm just not certain of which commands will do it right)

Thanks in advance.

I recommend you re-install xine using package manager.

Sweet Jesus!  It works!  DVD playback in xine is now running smoothly, no skips in audio or video and no desync between them either.  Thank you all for all your help.
