Thanks for all the thoughts.  I'll try the vesa driver, for a start, and try super-low resolution, and will see if I can mount one of my data drives to copy the log files to.  Maybe that will get us started.

As to the additional drive, I've got my 4 internal drive bays loaded, so it would be a hassle unless perhaps I could just disable one of them in the BIOS when I want to use the other?  Would that work for SATA drives? 

Actually, I could probably do most of this off the live CD, no?  Just get far enough to know if it's something that can be made to work, before actually installing to a hard drive?

Anyway, let me boot up that CD again, and see if I can't get a log of the xorg startup, and I guess I'd probably need the kernal log to see why it isn't finding the motherboard nic?

Okay, we're making some progress here!

I booted the Live CD, had X fail to start, mounted a data drive, and copied the log to it.  Then I changed the driver to vesa and X came up.  Also, for reasons I can't begin to fathom, it found my network connection this time so I was able to play a bit.  <g>  It looks really nice.  If I can just get Twinview working right on it, I'll be good to go I think.

Here's that log of the X failure... maybe you folks can make something out of it.. I'm not sure what's going on.

Whoops, sorry.. that's what I posted above.  Guess I didn't make that clear.  Or do you mean you'd like to see it after I successfully get X running via changing to the "vesa" driver?

Okay, the Xorg.0.log file *above* is when it had the "nv" driver defined.  After changing that to "vesa" and issuing a startx command, which brought up X successfully, here is the Xorg.0.log that resulted:

I think we're having a failure to communicate to some extent here.  <g>

I first posted my Xorg.0.log file from the failure, after which you asked me if I could now post the file.  I thought you meant to post it again after I'd *successfully* started X with the "vesa" driver, since I'd already posted the failure log from the "nv" driver.

If you look back to the post just preceding where you ask me if I can now post the file, you'll see the error log along with the failure in it.

I tried what you said just now, and did startx > startx.log, but the log file ended up empty.  So, I jotted down the messages I saw on the console after it bombed:

I don't think I need the legacy one, but that's the only one "slapt-get --search nvidia" showed me.  I think I need the current one, which supports the 7300 GT boards.  I notice that Vector is reporting my card as having half the memory on-board that it actually has, and that it correctly found the card at the "5:0.0" PCI bus address, but then bombed when it said something about X server ":0.0" being the problem. 

Like I said, I'm a noob, so I'm not quite sure how to read those errors.  I'm also not sure how to even install a video driver, as the other distros I've played with simply offered to go and get it as an option if I wasn't happy with the "nv" driver picked by default.  Running dual-head I believe I need the actual current NVidia driver for this card in order to enable Twinview.  Maybe not, though, as I've heard of people running other forms of dual-head setups.   Huh

I think you are right about the drivers, seems like the nv module is not compatible with your card and cant find proper modes. You can download the latest drivers from the nvidia website, pick the linux ones for 32 bits (even if you have a 64bits cpu, vl is a 32bits system). Copy the file to a temp dir of your choice and give it execution rights

chmod +x <name_of_the_file>

then you can run it as root with ./<name_of_the_file>
You will need the kernel sources in order to compile this drivers, I hope you installed them from the installer disk. If not you can find the package in some place on the disk or at the repo:

Make sure you have the exact same version of your kernel. You can know your kernel version executing uname -r on a terminal. Once you have the package, install it as root with

With the kernel sources installed you can run the nvidia installer, is easy from here, just follow the instructions.

I'll work on that.  There is one small hurdle remaining, however.  That's that I've been running from the Live CD and haven't actually installed anything yet.  I'm a bit gun shy about the GRUB / LILO issues, and being able to use my "daily driver" again.  Someone else suggested above that they'd had a bit of a hassle with GRUB initially also.

I can just reinstall my current setup if I have to, and of course all data is on separate drives and multiply backed-up, so it wouldn't be a disaster, just a hassle.  I was hoping I could get far enough with the Live CD to ensure that Vector would work on my system, before taking the plunge and hoping that somehow the GRUB/LILO thing would work out.  I've never had "nv" fail on me before, so I'm not sure.  And the *way* it's failing seems to suggest that there's something about my hardware that's throwing it a curve.

One other concern I have is that Vector seems to only see a small portion of my 4G.  I know most 32-bit distros do this, but I've never been sure why since they should be able to address 4G of memory, no?  Is there any plan for a 64-bit version, or am I locking myself into the 32-bit world if I fall in love with Vector?

I *think* I hear you saying I need to actually install to the hard disk before I can get much further.  Is that right?  And, if so, got any hints to keep my current GRUB safe?

About lilo, there is no reason to have a problem with it, you can setup it easily from the install cd. I have no much experience with grub, but is because lilo works great for me Wink
About the nv driver, I was googling a while and looks like has problems with your card in xorg 6.9 Did you try it with 7.x?

I cant help you with that, but no, there is no plans to build a 64bits version of VL. This has been a topic for discussion at the community, you are invited to join to it, but looks like VL has not the manpower yet to maintain all the versions for both architectures, and our devs want to focus the effort on the current versions. Anyway, VL should work fine with 4gigs, as all the 32bits systems, 4gigs are right the limit. Looks like another problem to me, but is a problem out of my league  Sad

The live-cd is currently a work in progress and is a way to try out the distro without installing it. But vl is designed to be installed in the hd, but all our gurus recommend the install version for a serious use. I think you need the installed version for the propietary drivers, but I am not sure, may be there is a workaround for this. I think there is a cheatcode which will allow you to install soft in a given location, but I dont know if this will work with a driver. One of our devs could give you better advice about this, I think Uel is the expert on this matter.
About grub, I have no experience with it, but you are absolutely safe if you install lilo in a floppy, and you dont touch the current mbr at all. If you pull out the floppy, your grub will be there as usual.

Sorry, I overlooked the current driver, and I see GeForce 7300 GT is on that driver's list of supported video cards.

Consider the risk of borking your system with a dual boot versus the inconvenience of connecting a spare hard drive to your system, without physically installing the spare hard drive in the computer. If you dont have a spare 10 or 20 GB hard drive, now would be a good excuse to get one. Hook up the spare hdd as master, place it on a stack of books beside the computer, or whatever, and test VL on your computer. If it works, you can commit to installing VL on your machine. If it fails, you disconnect the spare hdd, and get your computer back, intact.

If you decide to try the spare hdd, glean some pointers from this post:

Ah, thanks for that.. i was thinking that perhaps Vector couldn't support the current driver for some reason.  Not knowing much about this stuff, I thought maybe the kernel was too old or something.

You know, I read that post but I guess the gist of it went over my head the first time around.  Great idea.  Actually, though, see what you think.. would this work as well..?  I have two SATA 74G Raptors, which I set up with the initial idea of running RAID-0, but subsequently changed my mind about.  Once I settle on my distribution, then I'll use them both either as RAID-1 or just put /home on one and everything else on the other.  But the point is, I have a "spare" SATA drive already installed, and having had a bad experience with PCLinuxOS/2007 and SATA drives, I'm inclined to perhaps just unplug the current sda and make the other one sda.  If it all blows up in my face, I just plug back in my current sda.  Should accomplish the same thing, no?  Plus let me test for compatibility with the actual drive I'll be using.

Duh.. thanks for the tip, and thanks to the original suggester of this idea..

One point to keep in mind. New computers like his don't come with IDE drives. They come with SATA drives. So things that used to work in the past have to be modified for present conditions. SATA drives don't use "master" and "slave." Also, new computers generally don't come with floppy drives, so suggestions to boot from LILO on a floppy are also obsolete.

VL, once installed, can be started from the CD quite nicely.
