Author Topic: [SOLVED] OpenOffice 2.2 - hang on startup......strange?  (Read 8937 times)

Got a strange one with OpenOffice on VL5.8 SOHO final.

Initially after VL installation OO starts up very quickly with no problems.  After I have installed a few more things, updated some packages and tweaked some configuration to get VL how I like it OO then starts hanging on startup. 

When you fire it up the splash screen is shown instantly but it then sits there for about 30 seconds.  During this time there is no CPU activity although I have noticed that there is some small communication going on through the modem - it;s as thougn OO is pinging somewhere and waiting for a response that it is not getting?  After this 30 second delay the progress bar appears on the splash screen, fills up quickly and OO starts up as normal.  From then on OO appears fine with no other problems.

Does anyone know if there is any setting/config that I may have inadvertantly set (one thing is that I have turned off checking for updates automatically in OO) which could be causing this?  Has anybody else experienced this problem?

I have had this problem occure on 2 different PCs - both have onboard graphics/sound etc. so it does not sound like a hardware problem.   I have tried de-installing OO and reinstalling it (including deleting the profile in /home) which does not change anything.  On a side note I noticed that the package for OO is in the testing repositry and not the packages repository where I was expecting to find it.

The only way I can find to fix it is to re-install VL and try again.

I suggest that you rename /home/<username>/.openoffice.org2 then try again. You'll lose your OOo config settings of course, but it should get it working again.

I have already tried that but it makes no difference. 

It seems to be looking for a response on the web that it doesn't get so it times out and then starts up?

Thanks for the advice - tried it out by rebooting VL with no network and OO starts up fine with no delay. 

Then restarted VL with the network re-enabled and OO is still the same as before with the startup delay.

Also tried resetting the check for updates in OO to ON but this also did not make a difference.

Seems to confirm that OO is looking for something and is waiting for a response before continuing its startup procedure.

I tried a few quick Google searches with keywords like ooorg, startup delay, dns lookup, internet, etc, but didn't find anything. Maybe a search on the ooorg mailing list archives will shed some light on this.

do you have shared resources like a printer or a folder? Some similar problems has been reported configuring a network printer or any shared resource being temporarily unavailable, i.e. if you have  a shared printer, that printer should be reachable for open office at the startup. I dont know if this bug has been fixed though, I think there is  some some forum members with shared printers working fine (or at least that problems are not being reported).
You could check if disabling the firewall helps to solve the problem too.

Just a standalone PC - no network shares.
I have an HP printer that can be network enabled however I connect to it via USB (using HPLIP).

I tried disabling the firewall but no joy.

I  did a google search and came across an issue with OO and CUPS:

Not sure if this is my problem as I get 0% CPU during the hang.

Been doing some more digging and found this:

I am wondering if this is what is happening with my box in that the CUPS printer IP address is not correct?  Will check it out later when I get home.

Looks like this is a little common (little common, is that possible?  Shocked) but can be caused by more than one thing. I guess cups would be the first to check. Let us now.

I did check the CUPS config file and it is correct as it is set to look at the local machine only (loopback address).  I checked the CUPS access log when OO hangs and the following lines are reported:

I am not an expert with CUPS so am not sure if this error is relevant or not.

I tried another suggestion from the ooforum to clear /etc/resolv.conf so there is no DNS - OO fires up straight away with no delay  Huh  Put the IP address back in and OO hangs again on startup.  It definitely seems to be related to OO trying to search the network for something - general view out there seems to be that it is printers.

The thing that's strange is that immediately following a fresh install of VL, OO works fine so why would it now be searching the network?

One thing I do remember doing is changing my hostname using VASM as the on-board LAN is not detected by the installer and the network setup is skipped.  I know this is a long shot but could there be anything when running VASM that changes something that could cause this?

Run the command below from a terminal and then post the last two or three lines showing where it is hanging:

strace soffice

You might have to do install "strace", I can't remember whether it is installed by default or not.

Installed strace and run up OO twice, normal way that hangs on startup and again with /etc/resolv.conf cleared that makes it startup with no hang.  Looking at the traces they are identical until about half way where a number of differences start.  Apologies for the size of these but there are so many differences and I do not know enough about the traces to figure out what is going on - I hope they will give you some clues.  The following are the traces I got from the point where they change - I have also added the common first half at the end in case it's of any use.

Installed strace and run up OO twice, normal way that hangs on startup and again with /etc/resolv.conf cleared that makes it startup with no hang

Well after all that I can't really see anything super obvious in the straces. Obviously it appears to be a network DNS hang of clearing the /etc/resolv.conf file solves the issue. What is your /etc/resolv.conf file? Are you using DHCP? Post "cat /etc/resolv.conf" here also the output of "route -n" and "ifconfig". Who is your ISP? If you  are using DHCP with your ISP the resolv.conf file should look something like this:

search uniserve.com
nameserver 192.168.0.1

where the first line is the name of your ISP and the second is either your router address (if you are behind a router) or the DNS nameserver addresses you got from your ISP (there often is two of them).

I connect to the Internet via an ADSL modem/router.  My PC is set up to use DHCP and it's IP address is assigned by the router (the router runs NAT and DHCP server). The router address is 192.168.1.1.  I have a static IP with my ISP however it is assigned automatically when the router connects.
