I tried a few simple things with perl...

cpan .... install Bundle::CPAN

cpan .... install Perl::Critic

Lots and lots of errors....

to the point that I removed perl with the package manager, downloaded 5.8.8 source, ran configure -d, make, make test, make install.....no problems.

Re-ran cpan ... install Bundle::CPAN  --- perfect, no errors

Re-ran cpan ... install Perl::Critic --- perfect, no errors

and I am happily perling away.

You might consider a vanilla build like this for VL.  Works great.

The install program does put cpan in /usr/share/bin, so you have to put that in your path or call it directly.

run glxinfo and check to see if you are actually getting a visual at 0x5a
from what i found on google this is "Note that this is completely cosmetic and has no functional impact."

I have
Code:
0x5a 32 tc  0 32  0 r  .  .  8  8  8  8  0  0  0  0  0  0  0  0 0 Ncon
It is not a VL error, it is i965 one.

But I still can't run EVE-Online in wine, which happily runs even on GF2.

I'm currently running 5.86 RC1 but I had some trouble with my ati x1300 graphics card. During the installation after choosing fglrx as the driver it tries to test the x config but fails. It asks me if I want to manually edit xorg.conf but the file is only about 4 lines long. I browsed /ect/x11/ and found the almost empty xorg.conf file. There was also a xorg.conf.ati file here. Deleting the xorg.conf file allowed me to reboot into the gui.
 Unfortunatley the version of fglrx installed by default has a bug that makes Avidemux and a few other programs crash. The latest release of fglrx doesn't have this bug but I've had trouble getting that that installed. fglrxinfo gives me

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)

I've no 3d acceleration but nothings crashing so thats a plus. the only other problem I've had is that I can't seem to get the UK keyboard layout to work even though I'm selecting to through vasm.

other than that everything's peachy.

Spoke too soon. VLC & Mplayer have no video playback. Xine has a distorted picture. but Noatun plays them fine.
