Adding/updating software
« on: August 05, 2007, 08:42:52 am »
How exactly do I do this on a Linux based OS? I've only been going on and off using VL 5.8 since Friday and have not a clue where/how to update or add software.

 ???

either open a terminal and log in as root...type "gslapt" and the UI will appear......

or

go to start menu -> system -> look for something called package management (don' remember the name..)

There is an icon on your desktop which is labelled "VL Docs". If you go there and navigate to "VL Manuals" and then to "packaging system" all will be explained.

gslapt is usually under the "System" menu, or "Administration" and is sometimes labelled Software Installer (depends on whether you are using SOHO or Standard version, which you did not state, and which would have helped us a lot)...

I can't seem to find Amarok on my installation and checked the website for it, I don't know which package to go with  ???

That is what I want to use for last.fm scrobbling.

What version of VL are you using: Standard or SOHO?

the package should be called something like amarok-1.4.6-i586-1vl58. I guess you're using standard, as SOHO comes with amarok by default. You'll have to add a 'patches' repository in gslapt, or it will probably start whining about not being able to find some dependencies (more specifically qt-3.3.7).

[edit]

To add a repository, open gslapt, go to preferences (CTRL +P) and go to the 'Sources' tab. You can add this repository:

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/patches/

Don't forget to click "Add" before clicking OK.

Most music on my soundcloud page was arranged in programs running on VL.

I also want to point out that Vector Linux, unlike some other popular Linux distros, does not have automated upgrades.  You need to go into gslapt and do an update and then an upgrade manually.  Once again, the patches repository MUST be enabled to get most updates, including security patches and bugfixes.
