exeterdad has packaged the latest Thunderbird release for VL 5.8. You can get it from the testing repo:

hey, I have been using it since a few weeks ago. I note a big improvement over 1.5. Quicker and apparently a little lighter. Good addition to our repo. Good work, Exeter! I will uninstall mine and try the package.

Test it well my friend!  Hopefully this one runs a bit better on your machine.  I haven't seen a single thunderbird/slackware package that wasn't a repack of the generic precompiled thunderbird you can download from the Mozilla site.  I'm hoping since this is from source using our default CFLAGS that it might be better optimized for VL.
