Emacs 22.1 is out

and it's even got a built in AI "psychiatrist"?

I don't expect it'll be part of Vector any time soon, but I'd be interested to know other people here's opinion about this behemoth of a program.

Emacs has had a psychiatrist since days of yore...

I guess Emacs has better Unicode support now, among other things. A lot more here:

I still <3 Vim.

I can never see the point of this 'kitchen sink' program. Why put so much spurious unrelated fluff into a text editor?

The strong point of Emacs' approach is unity. That has allowed integration with running interpreters with support for debugging and execution of code blocks in another buffer, for instance. In an Emacs e-mail (rmail, et al.) or Usenet (Gnus) buffer, spell-checking, completion, copy & paste, indentation, etc. all function in the same way.

That's how I explain it to everyone else anyway.

Should have said "psychotherapist2 instead of "psychiatrist" :) In all honesty I think it's overkill for what most people want from a text editor, but what's 100 MB on a modern disk drive?
