I've seen other posts that deal with these sort of things but they do not specificly answer what i need to know. I'm wonder about specific programs running on VL.
1: Beryl. I know alot of people dont like beryl.. but easliy flipping through the cube makes multitasking much easier for me.. yeah wobbly windows is just pointless, but the beryl cube helps alot. Sli 88000gt's dont really care.
2: Wine. I run alot of windows programs that run on wine in other distrobutions ie debian and ubuntu.
3. Win4lin. Same deal as above.

What i would like to know is if people have succesfully gotten these programs to work, if it takes extra work and what not. As i read i understand that VL isnt upto date on its Xorg? i'm not sure what thats all about.

I've been a hardcore Debian user for a while now but debian is falling behind. Ubuntu is slower than windows and crashes about as much. So please let me know what you think. thanks.

p.s. i am a gaming addict, and have succesfully gotten wine to run with steam / counter-strike source on debian... if anyone has gotten that to run please tell.

I can't tell you much, but I'll throw my $.02 in on the beryl department

If you want to run beryl, this is your baby right here:
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/iso-release/VL5.8.6-SOHO-RC1.iso

That ISO is loaded with everything you need to run beryl. I'm not sure if it ships with beryl packages or not... but in case it doesn't, you can easily install beryl on that one..
It features the much needed xorg 7.
After that, it's just a matter of setting it up to work with your vid card...
Post in the right section if you questions after that..

Wine should work like in any other distro
slapt-get --update && slapt-get --install wine should do it

I think I would forget about Win4Lin. VirtualBox (1.4.0 has just reached the testing repo) and VMWare Server both work very well with VL.

wine works pretty fine on vector linux. I'd say whatever you managed to run under ubuntu with wine, you will get kicking in vector.
The reason for ubuntu's behaviour i think is its gnme build. Thats not the ionly thing. Ubuntu is too easy to break, even unwillingly. Vec/slack= more stability and its lighter.
Moe has made packages of latest from compiz-fusion. Get the iso ,burn and install it, from then its 10 minutes untill you spin the cube. Beryl is indeed very handy in some aspects. Older users would argue about it,but it is true. Beryl can make your work easier.Definatelly the "hit a corner of the screen" way of organisation of windows  and all...
I agree the wobbling is somewhat useless, but it does look pretty nice.
