Synergy - machine sharing

Synergy allows use of a single mouse and keyboard across multiple network connected machines.  Each machine does need a monitor screen.  Pushing the mouse cursor to the desired screen activates the master mouse/keyboard there.  It can largely eliminate need for KVM switch boxes.

The server(master)/client model works across Linux, Unix, MAC-OS, and Windoze and allows customization for screen layout (left/right/above/below) and also for mapping keyboard keys for each specific machine.

It's GPL  licensed and has good documentation.

It seemed to compile simply enough on a test VL 5.8 machine.

This would make a useful package addition to VL distro.

Very interesting.  I use a KVM myself.  But I could see a system like that being useful.  If it works, that is.

SGI IRIX has had a similar program called "Teleffect" for years.   It works fine.   This appears to be an even more configurable open-source version.

I've got Synergy working between a Red Hat FC6 box (RH provides an RPM package) with 1650x1080 screen and a VL machine (where I compiled raw source) with 1024x768 screen.   So far, it works flawlessly.   

Having it in a VL package would be handy.

I'd be glad to, except for a few factors:

1.  I'm *not* a programmer type.  If things don't work with ./configure, make, make install, i'm pretty much lost.

2.  I expect the Vector packaging requires/recommends certain conventions be followed for configuring/compiling such as config options, install directories, etc.  It may be all documented someplace, but I'm sure I'd need some hand-holding by someone familar with what all the conventions are.

3.  The machines here are all running a customized kerel for K6-2 processors, so I'm not sure something compiled from source would run properly on generic pentiums.  Likewise, I've tried to strip out as much of kde/gnome bloat as I can and limit things strictly to XFCE because of machine speed, disk space, and memory.  I would expect the desired packaging would be from a more generic pentium/stock VL install to be sure it would run properly everywhere.

If there's someone to help me learn the procedures, and if the system limitations above aren't a factor, then I'd be glad to try to contribute to packaging little things I find useful.
