downloaded and installed wine. then tried to run my app and got this. I am really new to wine (and vl) so any help you all could give would be really helpful!

root:# wine CHARSH.EXE
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine'...
wine: '/root/.wine' created successfully.
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 000c), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

I guess I should say this is an older vb 3.0 app and uses vbrun300.dll

Run winecfg and try setting the Windows emulation to something older (windows 3.1, 95 or 98 perhaps).

Dont EVER run wine as root... Ever...

you need to run wine as USER ONLY

I have successfully run a number of apps using WINE 0.9.40 which I compiled from source.  I removed this version of WINE cleanly and installed the VL package:

http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/testing/emulators/wine-0.9.43-i586-1vl58.tlz

When I tried to install the windows 32 bit apps that ran so well in the previous version I received the following:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 0046), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

I recieve this message no matter what I do with winecfg.

In the previous version of WINE I was able to install and run MS Word Viewer 2003.  However when I opened a word document with word viewer it would display only documents, no text (the same application ran flawlessly in Crossover Linux).  I did successfully install this same app to WINE as installed by the VL package 0.9.43 with identical results.  I can also successfully run wine notepad, etc.

I have been entirely unsuccessfull in getting WINE 0.9.43 to install any non-microsoft applications.  Hmmm...

dawnsboy,

I will try loading WINE 0.9.40 and see if it works for me. If not, I guess I'll have to look into something else like qemu.

I broke down and compiled WINE 0.9.43 and installed it from the source package obtained from the WINE download repository.  Same results as installing WINE from the pre-compiled Vector Linux package.  When I tried to install the Windows apps I customarily run with WINE 0.9.40 I received the following feedback:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 0046), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

Look familiar?

I did some digging around at the WINE HQ web site and it is stated in WINE documentation that WINE can function with or without certain dependencies being satisfied but the usefulness of WINE will be adversely affected.

Having said that, I do not know what could be missing from the stock install of VL 5.8 Standard Gold that would knock the legs out from under this particular release of WINE but allow previous releases to function adequately in the same environment.

I am not quite savvy enough to know whether that is the issue or if it's something entirely unrelated that might have a work around.  It would be nice if someone with that kind of know how would take a look at this thread, otherwise I am going to have to back pedal to a downgrade on my box as well.   Undecided

I wonder if this version works on SOHO or one of the development releases?

Apparently not in SOHO. I just got around to upgrading and got this result:

eric:$ winecfg
/usr/bin/wine: error while loading shared libraries: libwine.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I've tried building it from source in VL5.8 SOHO, and it fails with the same unhandled exception as others reported above. I guess this version is just a no-no for us.

ok, I found wine 0.9.37 but not 9.40. I'll give this one a try.

Hmmm...might be a bad release, but I'll try building it with the default compile flags tomorrow and see if that changes anything.

ok, I tried 0.9.37 but it failed too. I think its one of the controls my vb app is using called grid.vbx which is causing all my problems.

I have another vb app that seems to be working fine on this version.
