Lately when I log on to SOHO I get this error:

Sound server informational message
Error while initializing the sound driver
device: default can't be opened for capture
(permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device

It didn't do this before so I'm assuming that this must have happened after I downloaded a bunch of packages from Gslapt.

Now I do have sound, except for when I try to play a music CD (I've tried using Kmix).  Is this error the cause of the problem?
Thank you.

I'm not sure why, but it seems aRts is acting up. Try disabling it in kde's control center:
Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System -> uncheck "Enable the sound system"

I think the description "Enable the sound system is misleading, since it suggests that you won't have any sound at all. This is not true, sound should work just fine without aRts.

I did what you said and the error doesn't pop up any more.  Thank you.

Nope, it's just more KDE bloat Wink. For "realtime" audio production, jack is the thing to use nowadays, and for everyday use alsa works just fine. AAMOF, turning of aRts is one of the first things I do when I install SOHO.

Thank you for that information...since my audio work involves mostly speech recordings and their conversion to mp3 I hadn't pursued jack or aRts usage. As Nobody pointed out that pop-up is quite annoying.

Is it just me, or does that sound sort of weird?... Grin

Yeah, Jack is overkill for that. But if you want to put effects over it in realtime and "tweaq" the "knobs", that's when Jack really shows it's power (will post screenshot later Wink).
