Sorry about overlooking this thread... lots happening here lately.  I'm finally getting back to some normalcy.

I peviously mentioned the incorrect firewall configuration file that I alter.  The file is /etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall.  I simply make sure that the PERMIT= line is reflective of my local network range, and then I add a new port 22 entry (e.g. " 22/udp 22/tcp").  Save and reboot.
