i have a 50 gig hard drive
there was only one place to put the partition thingy and i put the type 83 like it said.
after that i couldn't make the type 82 thing because the [  NEW   ] button was gone. Huh
is there a way to start fresh?

Sounds like you made one big swap partition on your hard drive.

Start fresh by highlighting the partition using the up/down arrows, then choose delete with the right/left arrow keys. Make a new partition that does not fill the whole drive. It should default to "linux", don't change it. After that there should be some free space visible. Select it and create your additional partitions. Only for the swap partition do you need to mess with the "type" setting.

It is enough to just have one big linux partition plus a swap partiton. A good swap size is twice your ram up to a max of 512 mb. If you have a gig of ram, you can do without swap all together.

Don't forget to select "write" after you have made the changes.

Could be either:

- Your CD is corrupt, either from a bad download or burn.
There is a procedure for verifying a downloaded file. Google for md5sum.

- There is not enough room on the hard disk.
How did you partition it? Did you make a linux partition big enough, like 5 GB or more?

- Your computer is having hardware problems.
Since you are experiencing lockups this is possible. You may want to try a LiveCD version and see how it runs.

Please describe crashes. Do the install hang as in nothing else happens. Maybe there is a blank screen. Is this a problem after probing (setting up video)? After which screen does this crash?

linux-tui?  (Text User Interface).

Well, if that runs you have a starting point. Try some text mode applications, like mc, links, htop, and see what they do. If the shell is working okay, from there you can troubleshoot and fix problems with X-windows (GUI).
