wcs has packaged the latest R release for VL 5.8 and it is in the testing repo. It was built mainly because the previous R package available created some strange behaviour in slapt-get, as reported here.

Package: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.8/testing/x-apps/R-2.5.1-i586-1vl58.tlz

Code:
R: Language for statistical computing
R:
R: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and
R: graphics. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and
R: nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series
R: analysis, classification, clustering, ...) and graphical techniques,
R: and is highly extensible.
R: Author: R Development Core Team
R: Website: http://www.r-project.org/
R: License: GNU GPL

Ok, so the strange behavior remains. Now the package works and installs all the files in the right place.

However, typing
Quote
slapt-get --remove R-2.5.1-i586-1vl58 -s
still  leads to slapt-get trying to remove a big list of packages (that have nothing to do with R).

In order to remove it safely it is necessary to invoke slapt-get with --no-dep .

As this seems to show up on two different packages (2 versions of R, 2 different packagers, 2 different machines), it seems to have something to do with the name of the package and how slapt-get handles it.

Strange, no?...

wcs, I'm beginning to think this may be a problem with slapt-get (the command line tool only).
I have just made a new poppler package, and when attempting to remove it with slapt-get --remove poppler it wants to remove other packages (kdegraphics being totaly unrelated with it too!):

Code:
slapt-get --remove poppler
Reading Package Lists... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  kdegraphics gambas2 gambas2-runtime poppler
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After unpacking 49MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [y/N]

However, doing the same task in GSlapt only removes the poppler package, as requested.
Can you tell me if using GSlapt instead of slapt-get works for you too?

No luck...

Either removing R by slapt-get or gslapt leads to it trying to remove other packages.

That is very strange, because after installing R here, using slapt-get does try to remove a ton of packages, but GSlapt does not (screenie):

As you can see GSlapt only removes R, nothing else is in the removal list.

So weird...
I'm using gslapt 0.3.18 and there the problem remains. Is that the same version you're using?

Hmm...I'm still using version 0.3.15.
In any case, I've been talking to malloc on the #slapt-get  channel, and he is taking a look into this as well.

wcs, slapt-get's maintainer's are already working on a fix for this bug. The latest cvs revision of slapt-get seems to have this problem sorted out, but cvs GSlapt still had another problem. So there should be a new slapt-get/GSlapt release soon.

Great! Thanks.
I suppose this means that I don't need to modify anything in the package, right?
